How long realistic fat loss takes

Sustainable fat loss tops out at about 1% of your bodyweight per week, and the leaner you already are the gentler it should be — which is why the paces here run from roughly 0.25% up to 1%. Push past that and you start losing muscle and stalling your progress, not just fat.

The pace you pick sets the deficit: gentler paces are easier to live with and protect muscle; brisker paces get there sooner but demand more discipline and leave less room for error. Pick the one you can actually hold.

One difference you'll notice against other calculators: this one gives you a longer answer. Most divide your goal by a fixed weekly rate, which assumes you keep losing at the same speed forever. You don't — a lighter body burns less, so the same deficit buys less each week. We model that slowdown, which is why the estimate is a span of weeks rather than a date.

Frequently asked questions

How long will it take to reach my goal weight?

This tool gives a span of weeks for your goal and pace. It's deliberately a range, not a date: loss starts quicker and slows as you get lighter, and individual results scatter far more than a single number suggests.

How big a calorie deficit do I need?

This shows the daily deficit your chosen pace requires. As a rule of thumb, a roughly 7,700-kcal weekly deficit loses about 1 kg (a couple of pounds) of fat — but don't chase huge deficits; they backfire.

Is it safe to lose weight fast?

Beyond about 1% of bodyweight per week you risk losing muscle, energy and consistency. Slower is usually faster in the end, because you actually finish — which is why the gentler paces exist here.

Why do results slow down over time?

A lighter body burns fewer calories, so the same deficit yields less loss over time — and early water-weight drops flatter the first weeks. Hold one fixed deficit long enough and loss levels off entirely, which is why a gentle pace can't reach a distant goal without cutting further later. Sophia re-checks your numbers as you go so your plan keeps pace with your body.
